NEBDN Knowledge Test Revision: Are You Revising the Full Qualification Specification?

NEBDN has clarified that the Knowledge Test can assess underpinning knowledge across the full qualification specification. Here's what that means for your revision.

Preparing for your NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing Knowledge Test? There's an important point about revision that every learner should understand: the Knowledge Test can assess underpinning knowledge from across the entire qualification specification, not just the assessment criteria specifically marked for the Knowledge Test.

If you've been using the NEBDN Assessment Method Mapping to decide what to revise, you might have assumed that only the criteria marked for the Knowledge Test could appear in your examination.

However, this isn't necessarily the case.

Following clarification received directly from NEBDN in November 2026, we want to help learners understand what this means and how to approach their revision with confidence.

What Has NEBDN Clarified?

The NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (RQF) consists of ten units covering the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a dental nurse.

Learners are assessed through three methods:

  • Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)
  • Knowledge Test (KT)
  • Professional Discussion (PD)

The qualification specification includes an Assessment Method Mapping document, which identifies how individual assessment criteria are principally assessed.

It would be easy to assume that criteria marked for the Knowledge Test represent the complete examination syllabus.

However, NEBDN has clarified that the Knowledge Test can assess underpinning knowledge from across the full qualification specification.

This includes relevant knowledge associated with assessment criteria that are principally assessed through other methods, such as the Portfolio of Evidence, Witness Testimony or Professional Discussion.

In other words, a criterion does not necessarily need to have a Knowledge Test tick for its underpinning knowledge to be relevant to the examination.

What Does the Assessment Method Mapping Actually Mean?

The Assessment Method Mapping helps identify the principal method used to assess individual criteria within the qualification.

For example, some criteria may be primarily assessed through practical workplace evidence because learners need to demonstrate their competence in a clinical environment.

Others may be assessed through a Professional Discussion, allowing learners to explain their knowledge and experience.

However, this does not mean that the underpinning knowledge relating to those criteria is automatically excluded from the Knowledge Test.

The key distinction is between demonstrating practical competence and understanding the knowledge behind that competence.

For example, a learner may need to demonstrate an activity in practice as part of their Portfolio of Evidence.

The Knowledge Test could still assess their understanding of the principles, procedures or professional responsibilities associated with that activity.

The Knowledge Test does not replace the requirement to demonstrate practical competence through the appropriate assessment method.

What Does This Mean for Your Revision?

The most important takeaway is simple:

Don't limit your revision to assessment criteria marked specifically for the Knowledge Test.

Instead, use the full qualification specification to guide your preparation.

You can access the official qualification documents, including the specification, through the NEBDN qualification resources page.

The NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing covers ten units, including professional practice, communication, clinical procedures, oral health, professional development and medical emergencies.

Your revision should reflect the breadth of knowledge required across the qualification.

This doesn't mean you need to memorise every sentence of the specification.

It means developing a sound understanding of the underpinning knowledge associated with the learning outcomes and assessment criteria throughout the course.

Five Ways to Approach Full-Specification Revision

1. Review All Ten Units

Start by familiarising yourself with the full range of topics covered by your qualification.

Think about which subjects you feel confident discussing and which may need further attention.

Don't automatically exclude a topic simply because its assessment criteria are principally mapped to another assessment method.

2. Understand the Reasoning Behind Clinical Procedures

Dental nursing involves more than remembering what happens during a procedure.

Consider why particular actions are necessary, how they contribute to patient safety and what professional responsibilities are involved.

Understanding the reasoning behind clinical practice can help you apply your knowledge to different questions and situations.

3. Connect Your Workplace Experience to Your Learning

Your day-to-day experience in practice can be a valuable revision tool.

Think about the procedures you assist with, the patients you support and the professional standards you follow.

Can you explain why particular precautions are taken? Do you understand the principles behind the equipment, materials and procedures you encounter?

Connecting theory to practice can make unfamiliar questions easier to approach.

4. Use Practice Questions to Identify Knowledge Gaps

Practice questions can help you identify areas that need further revision.

Rather than focusing only on your score, review questions you've answered incorrectly and make sure you understand the reasoning behind the correct answers.

Remember that practice questions are revision tools. They cannot guarantee which topics will appear in your actual examination.

5. Avoid Last-Minute Panic

If your Knowledge Test is approaching, discovering that the full specification is relevant may feel overwhelming.

Try not to respond by attempting to relearn the entire course in a single evening.

Instead, review your existing knowledge, identify weaker areas and use manageable revision sessions to strengthen your understanding.

You will already have developed knowledge throughout your training and workplace experience. Your revision is an opportunity to consolidate that learning.

Has the NEBDN Knowledge Test Changed?

It's important to distinguish this clarification from a change to the examination itself.

This does not mean NEBDN has announced a new Knowledge Test format or introduced additional assessment requirements.

The published qualification specification already describes the Knowledge Test as assessing underpinning knowledge from across the qualification.

The clarification helps explain how the Assessment Method Mapping should be interpreted when planning revision.

Learners must still complete the required assessments, including the Portfolio of Evidence, Knowledge Test and Professional Discussion.

Each assessment has its own purpose within the qualification.

How Infills Academy Supports Knowledge Test Preparation

At Infills Academy, we recognise that preparing for an examination alongside working in a busy dental practice can be challenging.

We encourage our learners to develop a broad understanding of the qualification, connect their theoretical learning to clinical practice and identify areas where they may need additional support.

We are also reviewing our revision resources to ensure they reflect NEBDN's clarification about the scope of the Knowledge Test.

Our aim is to help learners approach their assessments feeling informed, supported and as prepared as possible.

The Takeaway: Revise Broadly, Understand Deeply

The NEBDN Knowledge Test is designed to assess the underpinning knowledge required of a dental nurse.

While the Assessment Method Mapping identifies the principal methods used to assess individual criteria, it should not be treated as an exhaustive list of topics that may appear in the Knowledge Test.

Use the full qualification specification as the foundation of your revision, focus on understanding rather than memorisation, and don't overlook knowledge simply because it is associated with another assessment method.

Most importantly, remember that the knowledge you're developing isn't just for passing an examination. It forms part of the foundation for safe, effective and professional dental nursing practice.
